Specific Learning Disability

Specific Learning Disability is a neuro-developmental disorder that significantly influences a child's ability to speak, write, read or make mathematical calculations. It begins early in life and is easy to identify if done early. But, some types of SLD's may go under the radar till adulthood. The types of SLD include dyslexia ( difficulty in reading), dysgraphia ( difficulty in writing and drawing), dyscalculia ( difficulty in calculations) and more. The disorder causes havoc in a child's academic life and needs professional intervention to ensure that the child's future does not suffer.

Here's everything else you need to know about Specific Learning Disability

Specific Learning Disorders are a set of neurodevelopmental disorders that cause difficulty in listening, speaking, writing and grasping academic concepts. These can be confused for normal difficulties in learning but are distinct from that in many ways. These disorders are of various types. Some children may face difficulty in reading, some in learning, while some may face difficulties in calculations. Because of the varied nature, and a difficulty in identification, SLD’s are very distressing for the child and their loved ones. Seeking early treatment and getting an accurate diagnosis can help the child in managing the condition in the long term.

A crucial part of a child’s life is education. Especially in a city like Hyderabad, which is an educational centre in Telangana, Children with SLD have a hard time coping with their condition. However, the educational phase of a child is crucial to their development. A recent news piece threw light on the state of mental healthcare in Hyderabad, with the city facing a severe crunch in mental healthcare facilities. That is where Cadabam’s is stepping in to upgrade the city’s mental health infrastructure.

SLD’s can be mistaken for a lack of effort on the child’s part and such mistakes in understanding the disorder can increase the distress faced by the child. It is incredibly important to diagnose SLD’s so that your child can get the care they deserve. THe diagnosis process includes:

  • Various Intelligence tests
  • Achievement tests, such as the Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT), and others.
  • Visual-motor integration tests
  • Language tests

Treatment for SLD's are varied. The treatments need to be comprehensive to ensure the child's comfort during daily life and academics. These could range from special teaching tools, leveraging technology, using visuals where possible, and the option to give exams through oral means, ( if writing is difficult). All of these are aimed to reduce distress within the child and in the child's learning process.

Children face many difficulties in daily life. Academics plays a major role in this. Especially, in today's world, where marks and grades play a very important part. Children facing SLD's suffer in academics through no fault of their own. Recovery from SLD's is not very effective if they are going through the same rigours of education while they are recovering. In some cases, this could even impede their recovery. This is where rehabilitation comes in.

Rehabilitation for SLD’s are aimed at assisting the child in their academic pursuits. The nature of SLD’s means that a child can face severe difficulties during their education. Rehabilitation focuses on the holistic growth and recovery of an individual. This includes a focus on education and social skills which are crucial to the growth of the child.
