Long Term and Palliative Care for Dementia: Overview

Who Should Consider Long-Term Dementia Care?

Long-term dementia care is designed for individuals who require a level of support that can no longer be met at home. This care is most beneficial for those who are:

  • Experiencing advanced cognitive decline.
  • Displaying significant behavioural and psychological symptoms.
  • Having difficulty performing daily activities (ADLs) independently.
  • In need of 24/7 supervision for safety.
  • Under the care of a family experiencing significant caregiver burden.

What Are the Signs Someone May Need Palliative Dementia Care?

Palliative care focuses on comfort and quality of life when a cure is not possible. Key indicators that this supportive care is needed include:

  • Severe, persistent memory loss affecting safety.
  • Inability to independently manage personal hygiene, dressing, or eating.
  • Significant and distressing behavioural changes like aggression or agitation.
  • Frequent hospitalisations or emergency room visits.
  • A substantial decline in physical health.
  • Noticeable withdrawal from social interaction.
  • Overwhelming stress and burnout for the primary caregiver.

What Dementia Conditions Are Supported in the Program?

Our program provides specialised care for various forms of dementia that require long-term and palliative support.

When should someone move to long-term dementia care?

A person should consider moving to long-term care when their safety is at risk at home, their care needs exceed what family can provide, or the primary caregiver is experiencing significant burnout. Signs like severe memory loss, inability to perform daily tasks, and increased behavioural issues are key indicators.

What is the difference between palliative and long-term dementia care?

Long-term care provides ongoing medical and personal support for chronic conditions. Palliative care is a philosophy within that care that focuses specifically on relieving symptoms and improving quality of life for individuals in the advanced stages of an incurable illness like dementia, rather than on finding a cure.

Can dementia patients live in long-term care facilities safely?

Yes. Specialised long-term care facilities like Cadabam's are designed for the safety of dementia patients. They feature secure environments to prevent wandering, 24/7 supervision, and staff trained in managing dementia-related behaviours, ensuring a safe and structured setting.

How does long-term dementia care support families?

It supports families by providing peace of mind and reducing caregiver stress. Programs offer regular communication, family counselling, and education about dementia. This allows families to focus on the quality of their time with their loved one, knowing their complex care needs are being met by professionals.

If your loved one is struggling with advanced dementia, professional support is crucial. To learn more about our specialised dementia care programs, call us at +91 9611194949.
