Are you Addicted to Smoking?

Do you find yourself picking up a cigarette even if you don’t want to? Are you smoking even when you’re not well? Have you tried quitting only to fail each time? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be addicted to smoking, although you can take this detailed self-assessment to find out.

Smoking is one of the most addictive habits in the world. Nicotine is the active drug that is present in tobacco which is highly potent and can cause cravings that are difficult to resist. Once you're addicted, quitting can be a challenge, but it's definitely possible.

There are many reasons why people smoke. Some people start smoking to fit in with friends or to relieve stress. Others may smoke to cope with difficult emotions or to self-medicate for mental health conditions. But no matter why you start smoking, the truth is that it's a dangerous and addictive habit.

Physical withdrawal symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Chest tightness
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Gas, constipation or diarrhoea
  • Increasing hunger and weight gain
  • Nasal drip, coughing, dry mouth and throat irritation

Psychological and Emotional withdrawal symptoms:

  • Having trouble focusing
  • Sadness or depression
  • Feeling uneasy, jittery, agitated or angry
  • Feeling worn out, fatigued or apathetic

You could try nicotine replacement products or ask your doctor about other medications. Remind yourself that cravings will pass, and avoid activities that you used to associate with using tobacco products. As a substitute for smoking, try chewing on carrots, pickles, apples, celery, sugarless gum, or hard candy.
