Am I Experiencing Burnout?

Are you feeling exhausted when you wake up in the morning? Have no energy to do anything? Finding it extremely challenging to go about your day with no motivation? The hustle-and-grind generation is preoccupied with chasing dreams and goals, all in little to no time. Whether you are at your dream job or working towards it, it’s important to take a step back and check in with your emotional and physical health. We all tend to be tired after a long day at work, but how can you tell if you’re burnt out?

Burnout is an actual issue and tends to be overlooked amid our busy schedules. It is a state of complete mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion. Those experiencing burnout may find it difficult to engage in activities they usually find meaningful. They may no longer care about the things that they find important or begin to experience an increasing sense of hopelessness. Apart from this, burnout may include other physical, behavioural and emotional symptoms.

The physical signs and symptoms of burnout:

  • Feeling tired and drained most of the time
  • Lowered immunity and frequent illnesses
  • Frequent headaches or muscle pain
  • Change in appetite or sleep habits

The emotional signs and symptoms of burnout:

  • Loss of motivation
  • Sense of failure and self-doubt
  • Increasingly cynical and negative outlook
  • Feeling helpless, trapped, and defeated
  • Detachment and feeling alone in the world
  • Decreased satisfaction and sense of accomplishment

Behavioural signs and symptoms of burnout

  • Withdrawing from responsibilities
  • Isolating from others
  • Procrastinating, taking longer to get things done
  • Using food, drugs, or alcohol to cope
  • Taking frustrations out on others
  • Skipping work or coming in late and leaving early

However, often stress and burnout can be confused with each other and tend to be used interchangeably. It is necessary to be mindful of the fact that stress is a response to a perceived threat. In contrast, burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged or excessive stress.
