Manic depression, also known as bipolar.

We all have our bad day where everything seems to get on our nerves and good days where even the devil cannot stop you. But when do these mood states become a disorder? Like manic depression, also known as bipolar, most of the mental disorders can be confusing and difficult to identify as their symptoms start off as a part of normal life. However the distinguishing factor is; intensity, duration and effects of mood states in manic depressions tend to be higher than the regular mood states.

Manic depression can be devastating as it affects the individual as well as the people around them. It can be very frustrating and exhausting when you do not know what can trigger these mood states. To cope or manage this disorder one has to know the symptoms to correctly identify it and seek out help at the earliest.

Manic depression is characterized of severe mood swings between extreme mood states or episodes. There are three exclusive mood episodes:

Major depressive episode:

The depressive episode is the bad days of manic depression. As the name suggest, depressive episode of manic depression has the same symptoms as in clinical depression. Here the individual is low, does not feel pleasure, loses interest and tend to have suicidal thoughts. There are also chances of the individual to develop psychotic depression wherein they lose their touch with the real world. Symptoms are:

  • Changes in appetite and/or weight (decrease or increase)
  • Fatigue, feel tired all the time
  • Difficulty in focusing on a task, concentration and remembering
  • Difficulty in making decisions, indecisiveness
  • Feeling helpless, guilty and worthless
  • Low self esteem
  • Changes in sleep patterns, oversleeping or insomnia
  • Being pessimistic about things
  • No longer interest in activities that the individual enjoyed earlier.
  • Constant physical complaints such as headache, digestion problems, etc
  • Thoughts about death or attempts t harm self
  • Irritability, restlessness

Manic episodes:

These are the extremely good days of the disorder. Here the individual tends to be high on energy, they may want to do a lot of things and engage in various activities. They tend to be very talkative and Sheldon feel tired. They behaviour may go out of control to become life threatening at times. They may also get angry when other people around refuse to cooperate with them. The symptoms affect the individual’s personal and professional areas of life. Symptoms are:

  • Have racing thoughts and multiple ideas
  • Very irritable
  • Take actions without thinking
  • Take part in risky activities
  • Feel less need for sleep
  • Increased energy
  • Behave inappropriately in social situations
  • Tend to talk fast and a lot
  • Make poor judgments
  • They may feel they have invincible abilities

Hypomanic episode:

This mood state is a milder version of manic episode. The individual may show similar symptoms but the symptoms tend to be less in intensity. But they are of a higher intensity that is noticeable by others. The symptoms of hypomaic episode do not affect the individual’s areas of life like manic episode and have lesser effects.

There are different types of manic depression. These depend on the different combination of the episodes and disturbed mood symptoms that occur in a period of time. They symptoms may occur differently for different people and the correct identification of it is essential for treatment.
