Bipolar disorders are a mental disorder which is characterized as both episodes of mania and depression. Mania is a state of elation and heightened energy levels where as depression is a state of feeling sad, low and hopeless. So how is Bipolar II different from Bipolar I?
Bipolar I need to have at least 7 days of manic episodes or manic symptoms. And usually, at least 2 weeks of depressive episodes that occur as well. Here the individual may share mixed features of depression and manic symptoms at simultaneously.
Whereas Bipolar II is where there are one or more than one major depressive episodes and at least one episode of hypomania. Hypomanias are less severe manic episodes. In bipolar II, episodes of hypomania are not as high as manic episodes in bipolar I. Individuals with bipolar II disorder experience more depressive episodes that episodes of hypomania. Depressive episodes are can occur soon after episodes of hypomania subside or later. Some individuals with bipolar II disorder cycle back and forth between hypomania and depressive episodes and some have longer periods of normal mood between episodes. The depressive episodes are similar to that of Major Depressive Disorder.

Treatments for Bipolar II disorder should be an effective treatment which is a combination of medication and psychotherapy. Medications would include antipsychotic, mood stabilizers and antidepressants.
