Smartphone Addiction

Addiction

Smartphone Addiction.

Smartphone addiction like any other addiction is the over indulgence in the habit, that is spending time with your smartphone. The term, as of now, is not a defined one but, with the increase of technology and usage, soon could be.

With the increase of various software applications, work or rather movement has decreased among humans. Smartphones have, sure, made our lives easier but with that come a penalty for over using it. Individual tend to spend most of their day with their phones ignoring their tasks and responsibilities; a typical scene at workplace. Students instead of listening to the lecture in class are distracted by the buzz of their notifications. Individual are so involved to get in touch and socialize with a person across seas but fail to listen and respect the one in front of them, affecting their interpersonal lives.

Why do people get addicted to smartphones? If we look at the typical substance addiction patterns, we see that spend time using smartphones tend to give the same kind of effects as when one consumes addictive substance. Spending time with smartphones tend to give the individual a euphoric feeling same as in substance use. It is also rewarding in nature such as gaming, getting ‘likes’ and appreciations on social media and getting to talk to new people.

There are a number of studies going on the topic to explore and get a clearer picture of this habit. One of the survey studies talks about how certain personality traits may make an individual more likely to get addicted compared to the other. According to this study the personality traits are:

  • Emotional instability: Individuals who tend to be moody and often have mood swings use their phone more often. The reason for this could be that; it is a way to elevate their mood and make them feel better.
  • Extroversion: Extroverted individual tend to have the need to be connected with others and spread their social circles. In this era of technology, smartphones are the easiest and apt way to do that.
  • Materialistic: Materialistic individual not only have to possess but also have to show what they possess. What is the best way to show off what you have other than actually using it more often in front of others?
