Schizophrenia in Children.

Schizophrenia in children, also called as extremely early-onset schizophrenia, is an uncommon yet a severe form of the mental health issue. Schizophrenia starts in children less than 13 years of age (and typically over 7 years of age), and to the other side from period of onset and seriousness, it is much the same as schizophrenia in adults.

Where in 1980’s that schizophrenia in children have to distinctly know as a part diagnosis before that time, children who today would be diagnosed to have autism, it is one of the types of pervasive development disorder, and it is considered under the diagnosis of schizophrenia.

Early signs and symptoms in childhood schizophrenia

The common manifestation of childhood schizophrenia may involve in developmental delay problems for example:

  • Delay in language development
  • Unusual crawling or delayed crawling
  • Late walking
  • Abnormal motor behaviours (arm flapping, rocking etc.)
  • Social deficits

Other Symptoms are like

  • Hearing voices and seeing things which are not real (hallucination)
  • Difficult writing, speaking, focusing or handle simple tasks
  • Thoughts and thinking pattern is in confused state
  • Sudden and bizarre changes in emotions
  • Extreme moodiness
  • Odd and eccentric behaviour/or speech
  • Sensitivity to sounds, light, smells or touch are markedly increased
  • Suspicious ideas that people are out to get them or talking about them(paranoia)
  • Social isolation and difficult to relating to peers and keeping friends
  • Severe anxiety and fearfulness
  • Lack of personal hygiene

Recent studies show that a bio-chemical change in brain and genetic and environmental factors are the causes of schizophrenia in children. Early diagnosis and medical intervention is important; schizophrenia is a chronic disease that can be controlled but there is no cure.

Treatment

Schizophrenia in children need prompt treatment from trained psychiatrist who specialized in to treat children. Medication like antipsychotics drugs are advised in correct dose will be effective otherwise it may cause adverse effects.  Medication and psychotherapy (individual therapy, family therapy, and specialized programs) are effective in treating childhood schizophrenia.
