MORE THAN JUST A DISEASE RELAPSE PREVENTION

Relapse can always bring a full stop to a refreshed curing therapy. What causes this to happen? As cited below through a few examples, are negative emotional states, physical discomfort, positive emotional states, conflicts with others etc.etc.

Most important to remember is that relapse doesn’t mean that the treatment process is a failure or the end of the world. Rather than giving or going back to this habit, kick start the right ways to rehabilitate your life. Here are some tips.  Call your friends, families or most importantly your doctor. You can finally emerge as a winner and get back on the road to recovery and use this experience to strengthen your commitment and build a plan against relapses.

Don’t attempt any life saving device, in order to go and try it alone. Even if you choose to go to a rehab it is advisable to rely on self-help programs, avail of therapy sessions, or take self-directed treatment approach. For all this   support of your immediate and external environment   is essential. Recovering from drug addiction is much easier when you have people you can lean on. This could take shape of encouragement, comfort and guidance from them to you. Support can also come in the form of

  • family members,
  • close friends
  • therapists
  • counsellors,
  • other recovering addicts,
  • health care providers,
  • people from your own faith or community.

Below we provide a case study of one of many types of relapse able illnesses. What comes first? Substance abuse or the mental health problem! Addiction is common in people with mental health problems. But though substance abuse and mental health disorders like depression and anxiety are closely linked, one does not directly cause the other. Hence, one can conclude that this differs from individual to individual.

The best treatment for dual diagnosis disorders is if they are treated concurrently. Don’t get too discouraged if you have a relapse. Setbacks do happen, but, with hard work, most people can recover from their relapses and move on with their recovery process. Also, to keep the tempo going you can benefit from joining a self-help support group like Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. They extend a branch to lean on since the member community knows what you have been going through –they   know  what your existing problem is and they extend a helping hand.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the U.S. Dept. Of Health and Human Services offers an extensive listing of license, certified drug treatment facilities for their country. As far as India goes, you’ll definitely find something on these programme on the internet or government  listed departments focussing on these issues. Treatment for dual diagnosis disorders make you think about the role that alcohol and other drugs play in your life. Also, offering

  • you a chance to learn more about alcohol and drugs,
  • helping one become involved with supported employment and other services,
  • helping you identify and develop your own recovery goals and
  • finally providing special counselling specially designed for people with  dual diagnosis.

How does one avoid alcohol or its abuse?

  • Don’t attempt to punish or preach,
  • don’t try to be a martyr,
  • don’t argue with a person when they are impaired,
  • don’t ever try to drink with a problem drinker
  • and above all, don’t feel guilty or responsible for another’s behaviour. How to kick the cigarette  butt?
  • Set a quick date.
  • Tell family, freinds and co-workers that you plan to quit.
  • anticipate and plan for the challenges you’ll face while quitting,
  •  remove cigarettes and other tobacco products from your home, car, work
  •  talk to your doctor about getting help to quit.
