Is alcoholism a disease?

alcoholism, alcoholism is disease, alcoholism treatment

Alcoholism is a disease

Yes, Alcoholism is a disease. It is a disease, like diabetes, pneumonia and heart disease. For many years alcohol addiction was considered a flaw of character causing individuals to make poor choices but science now shows that alcohol addiction is a complex amalgamation of many factors. They are:

  • Alcoholism is a chemicaldisease

Alcohol breaks down its substance differently in the stomach and entirely different in the brain of an alcoholic.

  • Alcoholism is biologicaldisease

Alcohol is genetically inherited. Studies show separated at birth identical twins that come from a history of alcoholics in the family tend to both be alcoholics irrespective of their environmental upbringing.

  • Alcoholism is a primary disease

That means it is not an effect of another disease. And has it’s own diagnosis and pathology. But it ends up being a cause for other diseases. Like heart, kidneys, liver, etc. and ends up having a rippling effect for even more diseases to enter the system.

  • Alcoholism is a progressivedisease

Alcohol worsens an alcoholic’s condition over a period of time. Because the consumption and sometimes the cessation of alcohol can cause for the immunity to lower and diseases to enter and some cases for the affected organs to never heal back.

  • Alcoholism is chronicdisease

Alcoholism is chronic because its cure can never be predicted. It keeps coming back.

  • Alcoholism is fatal disease

Alcoholism has a low survival rate which means any alcoholic would die about 12 years earlier than non-alcoholic. Also this estimation is different from the deaths due to car accidents, homicides, suicides, etc that is caused due to the consumption or the influence of alcohol.

Hence it is essential to understand that a lot of factors come in to play when it comes to being an alcoholic. From situational factors like dysfunctional families, stress, job pressures, etc to physiological effect alcoholism is a complex disease. To easily dismiss them as behavioural issue is not fair. We as a community must uplift alcoholics in to considering de-addiction treatments and rehabilitation. Stigmatizing and stereotyping them will only de-motivate them to not seek help. As family members and friends of alcoholics it is necessary for us to stop morally challenging them or shaming them and being pessimistic about their recovery. But we need to perpetuate them to seek professional help. For assisted admissions for your loved ones, call us now on +919611194949.
