“Use it or lose it” should be your mantra when it comes to memory. For those with mild to moderate dementia who live at home, here are some tips that may be helpful for the individual and the family/caregiver.

  • Focus, Concentrate, Pay attention:

Focus on having a ‘brain-healthy’ lifestyle, which includes no smoking, exercising, a nutritious diet, quality sleep and good hobbies, have a reduced risk of developing dementia. In the meantime, pay attention to your stress also.

  • Involve your senses:

Keeping your brain active is also thought to build reserves of brain cells and enhance their connections.

  • Mental exercise:

Performing a mental exercise twice a day could help delay the rapid memory loss associated with dementia for more than a year

  • Physical exercise:

Provide plenty of physical activities, such as daily walks. This is not only for your physical well being, but it has been shown that daily walks provide mental stimulation as well. Along with this, mindfulness meditation and yoga techniques can do a lot.

  • Nutrition:

You need to be mindful of what you are eating and what you are not. You need to know what to “feed your head”, but know as well what kind of food should you eat to keep your brain healthy? Sugar, simple carbohydrates and trans fats are at the top of the “don’t eat it” list. Avoid low-fat and fat-free products; instead, eat food with healthy fats like avocados and nuts and cook with olive oil rather than an oil like canola oil.

  • Memory strategies;

Involve in mentally stimulating activities daily, such as board games, card games, etc.; tasks that require interaction and a bit of problem-solving.
