Alcohol withdrawal Syndrome

alcoholism, alcohol withdrawals, alcohol withdrawal syndrome, alcohol withdrawal symptoms

wWthdrawal symptoms simplified

Alcohol withdrawal Syndrome are a group of symptoms that are life threatening and occur when an individual completely stops consuming alcohol or greatly reduces their intake after a long period of alcohol intake. These symptoms may start from 8 hours to days after the individual stops and may last for day or even weeks.

When an individual consumes alcohol and get addicted to it, changes in the brain chemical occur, some gets suppressed while other increase, and it starts functioning according to the amount of alcohol the individual consumes. This becomes a pattern and the body gets used to it. When the individual suddenly stops or reduces their intake it brings disruption in the pattern formed earlier. Alcohol withdrawal symptoms are the results of these changes.

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms:

  • Hand tremors
  • Nausea
  • Feeling anxious
  • Sweating
  • Headache
  • Sleeplessness
  • Delirium, in extreme cases

These symptoms, in many cases, occur in three stages:

Stage 1: Anxiety, sleeplessness, nausea, loss of appetite, tremors, fatigue, abdominal pain, and mood swings. These symptoms are considered mild and occur from 8 hours of the last drink.

Stage 2: Increase in body temperature, respiration and blood pressure, confusion, sweating, mood disturbances and irritability. These symptoms are considered moderate and occur within 1 to 3 days of the last drink.

Stage 3: Delirium, which involves symptoms such as fever, hallucinations, agitation and severe confusion. These symptoms are considered severe and occur a week of the last drink.

Withdrawal symptoms do not follow a similar pattern for all individuals; they are highly individual as it depends on various other factors. Factors such as amount of alcohol intake, the period of time they have been drinking, family history, mental health issues if any and stress levels.

To manage the withdrawal symptoms rehab centres like Cadabam’s Anunitha and professional provide medication that reduces these symptoms along with other physical symptoms and also helps reduce cravings.

When an individual decides to quit alcohol after years of intake, they need to first consult a professional as these withdrawal symptoms can severely affect an individual. The whole withdrawal process also has to be done under the supervision of a professional. For help, call us today on +919611194949.
